Quoting properly
People reasonably ask for a figure before anyone visits. Some of that is possible, and the parts that are not are worth naming, because a number produced remotely for Leduc is a guess wearing a quote's clothing.
What a photo shows
A good deal, actually. Photographs show the cracking pattern, which is the single most useful piece of information about a surface, and they show whether edges are breaking away and roughly how worn the texture is.
What they do not show is area with any accuracy. People underestimate drives consistently, and an area that is wrong makes every figure built on it wrong by the same proportion.
They also hide the two things that cause surprises: whether machinery can reach the work, and what is under the surface. The signs you can photograph are genuinely useful, the base is not one of them, and the variable list explains which is which.
How to get a figure
Two or three shots from different angles and a rough length and width. That is enough for us to say what kind of job it probably is.
We will say what it is likely to be and what would move it, and we will call that a range rather than dressing it up as a quote.
Area on a wheel, access checked, condition looked at properly. This is the point at which a figure becomes something you can compare.
Nobody knows what is underneath until the surface comes off, so how that would be priced is settled in advance rather than discovered.
The honest gap
Because of the base, almost always. Until the old surface is lifted, the condition of the ground beneath it is inference rather than fact, and soft spots add work that nobody could have priced sooner.
The way to handle that is not to pretend it will not happen. It is to agree beforehand what additional base work costs per area, so if it arises you are approving a known rate rather than negotiating mid-job.
Everything else should be fixed by then. The residential variables, the commercial ones and the questions to ask anyone quoting all come down to having the unknowns named instead of left vague.

Quote for our Leduc driveway was measured on site with a wheel and a level, not estimated from a satellite photo.
They cored the old driveway in Leduc before quoting and the number was built on what was underneath.
Crack sealing and a sealcoat at our Leduc house instead of the replacement another company pushed.
Our Leduc parking pad was widened with the permit handled by them. Inspector signed off.

Driveway Paving
The apron cracks first because the base under it was never compacted properly. This is not a surface problem. It is a foundation problem, and it decides whether resurfacing will hold.

Asphalt Repair
Every April, Edmonton's potholes reappear. They did not form overnight. They started as open cracks the previous fall, filled with water, and shattered when the freeze-thaw cycle began. The repair you avoid in October becomes the pothole you cannot avoid in spring.

Sealcoating
The autumn window for sealcoating closes fast in Edmonton. A sealed surface resists salt damage and plough wear on edges. Here's when to act and what changes if you wait.

Send a few shots and rough dimensions for a range, then we will measure it properly and give you a figure with the base contingency already agreed.
Site visits and measured quotes cost nothing.
